Young Drivers Motor Insurance UK - A Review

Our review of young drivers motor insurance

Under 25s looking for low cost car insurance need to do all that they can to reduce costs. As there are a few things that they can do that will help, we'll review them here. Obviously, the more of these that you can apply, the lower the price you will pay.

The car itself, not unsurprisingly, is the most important element. It's even worth considering trading in your car if it's a high insurance group vehicle. We recommend sticking to cars that are under insurance group 10 (of the 1-50 Thatchem rating). A Corsa or Clio, for example, fit the bill.

Next, you don't want to do anything to your car. Don't customise it and risk pushing up the premium. The only exeption to this is to add Thatchem approved security enhancements. See what's available for your car. Especially if you're planning to keep the same car for a number of years, it's a wise investment.

If you can improve the security for your overnight parking, do so. Garaged overnight is ideal. Any off-road placement will help.

While you mustn't pretend that an over-25 (usually a parent) is the primary driver when they are not as this invalidates your cover, you can list them as the second driver and this usually reduces the premium.

Another type of policy to avoid is third party cover. This offers no protection for personal or pasenger injury or losses and is therefore too risky.

You can cap your annual mileage if you are not planning to use your car much for longer journeys.

Alway change insurance company every year to realise savings that are always greatest for new customers.

Some choose to train for and pass the advanced driving test. As this renders you a safer driver, it reducs your premium.

How you get your cover, of course, is very important. While we generally advise against using a price comparison site owing to the problem that they present in relation to quality control, we do recommend them for the younger driver where pragmatism is essential to keep down costs.

An alternative route is to use Endsleigh Insurance, the young driver specialist, that does seem to find some excellent deals for young people.

Any good
will put you in contact with either of these options. While young people usually like no frills cover to keep down costs, it still makes sense to check what your getting and to not simply select the cheapest without knowing what the associated cover looks like.
